What Happens When You Unplug

I went off the grid this weekend.

No emails, no content, no screens. Just my girlfriend, my journal, my books, and the real world.

I wanted to run an experiment. A proper one. Three full days without any of it.

And honestly, by day 2, my brain felt different.

Way sharper. Much more present. Like a fog I didn’t really know was there had lifted.

Here’s the funny thing. I didn’t even realize the fog existed until it was gone. That’s how subtle it is. You don’t notice the haze because you’ve been living in it for so long that it just feels like… normal.

Put the phone down for a few hours (which is easier said than done) and suddenly everything around you feels a little more vivid. Conversations are more engaging. Food tastes better. You actually notice the world around you.

My girlfriend pointed it out before I did. She said I seemed more relaxed, more here. And she was right. I wasn’t half-listening while mentally scrolling through a to-do list or wondering what I missed online.

That’s what happens when you give your dopamine system a break from constant stimulation.

Your brain recalibrates.

Now Multiply That by 10x

Now multiply the benefits from my 3 day experiment by 10x.

That’s what quitting adult content does.

I coach men through this every day, and the pattern is the same every single time. Within a few weeks of quitting, guys start telling me things like “colors look brighter” and “music sounds better” and “I actually want to talk to people again.”

It sounds dramatic. It’s not. It’s just neurochemistry.

Technology overstimulates you. But adult content straight up hijacks and ruins your brain.

It’s the same mechanism, but with a very different level of intensity. Think about it this way. Your phone delivers a steady drip of dopamine hits throughout the day. Notifications, social media, news, whatever. That’s bad enough. But adult content? That’s not a drip. That’s a firehose.

And when you cut the biggest source of artificial dopamine out of your life, everything else… food, conversations, your presence… comes flooding back even harder.

Why Your Brain Feels “Off”

Your reward system was built for the real world, not for a screen filled with infinite novelty.

This is the part most guys miss. They think they just need more discipline or a better morning routine. But the problem isn’t their routine. The problem is that their brain’s reward circuitry has been completely recalibrated by a stimulus that didn’t exist 20 years ago.

When your dopamine receptors are hammered by superstimulus every night, everything else in your life feels muted by comparison. The gym feels pointless. Your work feels meaningless. Your relationship feels flat.

Those things didn’t change. Your brain’s ability to experience them got buried under a layer of grey.

The Real Experiment

Which is why quitting is so life changing.

Every day you stay clean, you’re re-attuning your reward system to what it was designed for. Real conversations. Real connection. Real achievement. The stuff that actually matters but stopped feeling like it mattered because your brain was getting its fix elsewhere.

I took three days off screens and felt like a different person. Imagine what happens after 30 days of quitting the thing that overstimulates your brain more than anything else.

Heck, I’ve been clean for over five years now and I still notice the benefits compounding. That’s how deep the damage goes, and that’s how powerful the recovery is.

I’m back and happy to be here.

More to come this week.
